Leisure activities in Darmstadt
The oldest park in Darmstadt is the Herrngarten, whose history dates back to the 16th century. It is designed in the English style and still enjoys great popularity today.
Beautiful playgrounds, a large cafe, a cozy beer garden and a restaurant make the park a destination that is well received by the whole family. Also well visited is the Große Woog, a natural swimming lake in the middle of Darmstadt, which allows locals and out-of-town visitors to take a refreshing dip in the summer.
The market square is a feast for the eyes when illuminated in the evening. It was actually laid out as a trading post in the 14th century, and the renovation of the square was completed in 1996. The radiating pattern of the Indian granite paving is impressive.
In the south of the market square is the town hall, where a Ratskeller invites you to linger. In the immediate vicinity is the Luisenplatz. During the Christmas season, the large Christmas market takes place here, attracting numerous local and out-of-town visitors.
