The street ends at Opernplatz with a cultural highlight: the Frankfurt Alte Oper, representative building of the Gründerzeit. On the square in front of the Alte Oper, you will find exclusive top restaurants and cafés, in addition to a beautiful large fountain, on the stone edge of which a colourful crowd lingers.

But not only Frankfurt itself, also the surrounding area has a lot to offer and is best explored by hire car. We have put together a few tips for rental and travel.

Taking over the hire car

If you are arriving in Frankfurt by plane, you will find rental stations in Terminal 1 in the Airport City Mall in Area A or in Terminal 2 in Area D, Level 2. You will also find a hire car centre with a number of hire car stations at Frankfurt Central Station. Follow the signs or ask at the information desk.

Booking the right hire car

From small cars to Porsches, the range of hire car companies is wide. So you can choose the hire car according to your travel plans.

If you are primarily planning to be in Frankfurt, you might want to go for a smaller car, which will give you a chance of getting into one of the rare parking spaces. If, on the other hand, you are planning a trip to Germany, it is more advisable to choose a large and comfortable limousine.

Sights in Frankfurt

Dazzling skyline and diverse museums
From the Museumsufer you look out over the fascinating skyline of “Mainhatten”.

Proud skyscrapers offer an unforgettable sight, spectacular at night when thousands of lights shine and reflect in the water.

Many museums are located on both sides of the Main, e.g. the German Film Museum, the famous Städel, the Jewish Museum, Architecture Museum and the Icon Museum, inner-city about 50 other exhibition houses.

Highly interesting the Senckenberg Museum, largest natural history museum in Germany. Already in front of the museum you are welcomed by an oversized dinosaur, which makes curious about the exhibits of prehistoric times on display.

Goethe House: Birthplace of the Great Poet
Literature lovers should not miss a visit to the Goethe House. This is where the German poet prince saw the light of day. Thanks to the historical furnishings, it is not difficult to imagine how the young Goethe, who came from a wealthy family, lived at one.

The Goethe House is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and on Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. Admission costs seven euros.

Paulskirche: Cradle of German Democracy
A monument of historical significance is Frankfurt’s Paulskirche. It was here that Germany’s first democratically elected parliament, the National Assembly, met in 1848.

In the basement, the mural “The Procession of the People’s Representatives to St. Paul’s Church” by Johannes Grützke commemorates this important time in German history. The Paulskirche can be visited daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free of charge.

Suggestion of a round trip

Wiesbaden: Historische Spielbank
A round trip from Frankfurt could take you to Wiesbaden first. You can be there in half an hour.

You can expect a well-kept spa town, whose healing springs were already appreciated by the ancient Romans. But the highlight of the city is certainly the magnificent casino, which is located in the Kurhaus.

When you try your luck in the casino, you are in the best company. Already Fjodor Dostojewski and Richard Wagner stood there at the roulette table. The classic gambling room is open from Sunday to Thursday from 14:45 to 03:00. On Friday and Saturday you can even play until 04:00.

Eltville: Home of the Riesling
Next stop of the round trip could be the wine town Eltville. The drive will take you just fifteen minutes. In Eltville, you can stroll through a picturesque old town. Numerous half-timbered houses line the streets.

Don’t miss loading up the trunk of your hire car with a few cases of the delicious Rheingau Riesling, which is grown in this region.

Rhine: Home of the Lorelei
Before you head back to Frankfurt in your hire car, don’t miss boarding one of the excursion boats that cruise up and down the Rhine during the summer months.

Many boats pass the famous Loreley Rock, where legend has it that the Virgin Loreley once combed her golden hair and ensured that river travelers found a watery grave.
