Exploring Padova by Hire Car

A magnificent basilica, a picturesque old town with enchanted alleys and arcaded passageways, and lively pedestrian zones that invite you to go on extensive shopping trips – all this makes Padua a worthwhile holiday destination.

The city is just 30 kilometres from the lagoon city of Venice. There are numerous historical sites to discover in the surrounding area.

All of them can be easily reached by hire car. For rental and travel we have compiled a few tips.

Taking over the hire car

Many travelers reach Padova via the airport in Venice. From there, it is only three quarters of an hour by hire car to the destination. At the airport, there are numerous hire car agencies located on the ground floor of the arrivals area. Before you decide to hire car, just make sure that your hire car is also located at the airport. After all, if you have to take a shuttle there first, you will lose valuable travel time.

Booking the right hire car

As in all large cities, parking spaces are in short supply in Padova. So it’s better to book a small car that will allow you to use tight spaces.

Hire car prices

In Padova, as in Venice, prices for hire cars are usually in the middle range. However, during peak season, there can be a shortage of vehicles and then the prices also go up. You can often get great deals if you book well in advance of your trip and use our handy price comparison tool.

Insuring the car properly

In the turbulent city traffic of Padova, an accident can happen quickly. Protect yourself and book a hire car with comprehensive insurance without excess. With the liability, it is important to pay attention to the amount of coverage.

It should be at least one million euros, so that you have at least some protection if people are injured in an accident or multiple vehicles are involved. If the coverage amount of your hire car company does not seem sufficient, you can additionally protect yourself with a so-called Mallorca policy. Your insurance company will be happy to advise you.

age limit

You must be 19 or 21 to hire car in Venice and Padova with most hire car companies. Drivers younger than 25 will often pay an additional fee. Check the conditions of your rental company before renting the car.

Accessories

When looking for your hotel in Padova, a navigation device can serve you well. This and other accessories must always be ordered separately from your hire car company. Make reservations well in advance to ensure that the equipment you want is available on the day of your hire car.

Language barrier

Not all staff at hire car stations in Padova and Venice speak fluent English. Make sure you know the phone number of the Italian head office of your hire car company before you travel. There you can ask for telephone translation assistance in case of need.

Free kilometers

There are plenty of delightful destinations around Padova. Hire a car with all the kilometres free to explore as many of them as possible.

Remember the tank regulation

Some hire car companies in Padova and Venice oblige their customers to buy the first tank of fuel for an expensive service charge. The car can then be returned with an empty tank. To save on the service fee, make sure to book with a rental company where you can pick up the car with a full tank and simply return it with a full tank.

Bail

There is also a pitfall to consider when it comes to the security deposit. There are rental companies that actually charge the amount to your credit card, not just block it. In this case, once the car is returned, it may take longer for the money to flow back into your account. Check with your hire car company’s terms before booking, and make sure your card’s credit limit is sufficient to cover the deposit.

Customer Satisfaction Hire Car

At Venice airport in particular, customers repeatedly report long queues. So plan enough time especially when returning the car, so as not to miss the plane. The external condition of the vehicles is also sometimes criticized. Examine your hire car closely and have all scratches or dents confirmed in writing in a fault report.

Keep the document in a safe place. This is the only way to avoid being held liable for damage you didn’t cause when you return the car. Some customers complain that your hire car station tried to sell unnecessary additional insurance. Make sure the car is adequately insured right at the time of booking and then consistently refuse to sign up for any additional insurance when you get there.

Safety hire car

As a rule, rental vehicles in Padova and Venice are roadworthy. For your own safety, however, you should test the lights of the car before the first trip and check whether warning vests, warning triangle and first aid kit are on board. Also, do a quick brake test in the parking lot.

Extremely steep rows of seats enabled the students to follow the events in the “Teatro Anatomico”, which was built in 1594. A special feature is the hole that is in the floor of the lecture hall. Since the church had forbidden the dissection of corpses, the corpus delicti could be hidden here in case of danger.
