Exploring Terni by Hire Car

In the middle of the centrally located region of Umbria is the small town of Terni. With about 109,000 inhabitants, it is one of the smaller cities, but in the region it is one of the largest.

Since Terni is only about 100 kilometres from the capital Rome, it can look back on a long history.

A magnificent Roman amphitheatre, a 17th-century Baroque cathedral, an 11th-century Romanesque church and a Pinacoteca worth seeing make Terni an ideal destination for culture buffs.

But also the surrounding countryside attracts with many charming places that can be easily reached by hire car. For rental and travel we have compiled a few tips.

Taking over the hire car

Many travellers reach Terni via the airports in Perugia and Rome. Numerous hire car agencies can be found in Perugia between the arrival and check-in zones. At the Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Rome, hire car agencies are located at Torre Uffici 2. From the entrance hall, you just have to follow the signs to the hire car agency. However, before you choose a hire car company, you should make sure that your rental company is also located right at the airport. After all, if their station is only close to the airport, you may have to wait a long time for the shuttle to take you to your hire car.

Booking the right hire car

More than 100,000 inhabitants ensure that parking spaces are in short supply in Terni too. So rather book a smaller vehicle that can just about fit your holiday luggage to take advantage of tight gaps.

Insuring the car properly

In the turbulent city traffic Ternis with an unfamiliar hire car is quickly once an accident. With a fully comprehensive insurance without deductible, you are on the safe side in case of damage. With liability insurance, it is important to pay attention to the amount of coverage. It should be at least one million euros. Because if people are injured in an accident, it quickly becomes very expensive. If your rental company’s coverage is too low, you have the option of taking out a so-called Majorca policy for additional protection. Talk to your insurance agent.

age limit

You have to be 21 or even 23 to hire car from most rental companies in Terni, Perugia and Rome. And many charge drivers who are under 25 an additional fee. Check with your rental company’s terms before renting the car.

Accessories

Accessories such as navigation equipment or child seats must always be ordered separately from your rental company. Remember to book in good time. This is the only way to guarantee that your desired equipment will be available at your station on the day of the rental.

Language barrier

Not all the staff at the hire car stations in Perugia and Terni speak flawless English. Even in Rome, you may find yourself stuck with English. Cover your bases and write down the phone number of your rental company’s Italian head office before you travel. With a little luck, you’ll find someone there who can interpret.

Tank control

There are hire car companies in Perugia, Terni and Rome that require their customers to buy the first tank of fuel for a service charge. The car can then be returned with an empty tank. Since you will never manage to drive the car completely empty before dropping it off and in order to save the unnecessary service fee, you should book with a rental company where you pick up the car with a full tank and drop it off with a full tank.

Bail

Be sure to book with a rental company that only blocks the deposit on your credit card. Hire car companies that actually collect the money, namely like to take their time with the return of the deposit after returning the car. Before you start your trip, you should also check whether the credit line on your card is sufficient to pay the deposit.

Customer Satisfaction Hire Car

Long waiting times are the main annoyance of some customers. Therefore, plan enough time to avoid missing your flight especially after returning the car. Also, before you set out on your trip, inspect the hire car carefully. Have any faults, such as scratches and dents, confirmed in writing by your hire car company. Keep the document safe so that when you return the car you are not held liable for any damage that you did not cause.

Safety Hire Car

Most hire cars in Terni, Perugia and Rome are completely roadworthy. Again, since exceptions prove the rule, make sure to test all of your vehicle’s lights before your first trip and do a quick brake test in the rental company’s parking lot. Also make sure you have a warning triangle, first-aid kit and high-visibility vests on board for all passengers.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is a good starting point to begin a stroll through the city. It was built in the 17th century and impresses from the outside with its richly decorated baroque façade. Inside, the splendour continues. Visitors are particularly captivated by the opulent ceiling paintings. Right next to the cathedral you will find the Roman amphitheatre dating back to 32 BC. During the summer months, the amphitheatre is still used for performances. It is best to ask at the tourist information for the current program. You’ll find it on the south side of Piazza Cornelio Tacito.

Next stop on the city tour could be Chiesa Sant’Alo. The church was built in the 11th century and is a prime example of the Romanesque architectural style. If the gate is locked, you can ring the bell at the Convent of the Poor Clares next to the church and ask to be let in.

A reminder of when Terni was a major industrial centre can be found near the railway station. Here stands a steel press dating back to 1935, weighing in at 12,000 tons. A visit to Piazza San Francesco could be the end of the city tour. Here you can sit down in one of the pretty street cafés and relax and enjoy the lively hustle and bustle.

In addition to strolling through the alleys of the old town, it is worth visiting the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which was built from 1190 onwards and is considered a prime example of the Lombard architectural style. In the interior, it is above all the choir stalls from the 16th century that attract attention.
