Discover Costa Calma by Hire Car

On the Canary Island of Fuerteventura is the village of Costa Calma. Belonging to the municipality of Pajara, Costa Calma is located in the southern part of the island.

The place itself is divided into two areas by a thoroughfare and a lush green strip. Costa Calma is extended to a length of 2km and is constantly growing.

On the main street there are numerous bars and cosy restaurants. Above the road there are flat hotel complexes and bungalows that blend harmoniously into the landscape. The lower part of Costa Calma is located directly on Playa Sotavento.

Shopping and strolling

The white sandy beach, about 30km long, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Western Europe. It is cleaned daily. The sea level is determined by the tides. At high tide the turquoise water invites you to swim. Partly strong winds allow numerous water sports.

Rocky outcrops reaching into the water can be avoided at low tide. Then the Playa Sotavento invites to beach walks. The vegetation in the middle of the town consists of pine trees and palm trees.

This green area in Costa Calma is the largest forest on the island. From the airport in Fuerteventura to Costa Calma it is about 65km. With a hire car, the way can be easily covered on a country road.

When the passing landscape changes into a lush, green vegetation you have reached Costa Calma. Numerous shopping facilities and a petrol station are easy to reach here via the town’s main road.

Sights in Costa Calma

Start your holiday with a beach walk. Playa de Sotavento stretches south for 30 kilometres. The sea, the surf and the finest sand await you.

After an extended tour, your eyes may crave some greenery. You’ll find it in the village, where large palm groves have been planted to provide domestic water.

If you feel like shopping, you can head to the Sotavento shopping centre. Surfers in particular will find their fashionable heaven here.

Two kilometres south of Costa Calma, Hotel Gorriones is home to the René Egli surf school. Here you can expect professional teachers and the best material. Afterwards you can sit down in a beach bar and let the experiences of the day pass in review.

Finding the good restaurant

Costa Calma is a tourist-only resort. Many restaurant operators apparently see that as a reason not to try too hard. The guests come anyway.

But there are laudable exceptions. Visit the restaurant Mirador de Sotavento and enjoy Spanish cuisine in a pleasant ambience. The restaurant is a little out of the way towards La Lajita, but worth the drive.

Discover the beautiful hotel

We recommend the VIK Suite Hotel Risco del Gato. The complex is very well maintained, the architecture appealing and the service leaves nothing to be desired. Here, relaxation is guaranteed.

Discover the Costa Calma area

There’s a truly secluded beach to conquer on the other side of the island.

Playa de Barlovento and its neighbouring beach, Playa de Cofete, are the only unspoilt beaches on the island and promise a special nature experience.

However, extreme caution is advised when swimming – dangerous currents can put even experienced swimmers in danger here.

A long walk along the secluded beach through breathtaking scenery, however, is immensely rewarding. The beach is just over 40 kilometres from Costa Calma. The roads in the region are often rough, so an off-road vehicle is an advantage.

Find picturesque villages

Another worthwhile destination is the hamlet of Betancuria. It was founded in the 13th century and is considered the most beautiful place on the island. Stroll through the picturesque alleys and don’t miss visiting the cathedral. The current building dates back to the 17th century.

It’s also worth visiting the Casa Santa Maria. Here you can not only eat excellent food, but also visit traditional workshops and watch the craftsmen at work. Betancuria is just under an hour from Costa Calma.
