A visit to Ponta Delgada’s Mercado Municipal is also a worthwhile experience. The market stalls offer fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and cheese as well as souvenirs and handicrafts.
A particular specialty of the region is fresh cheese, made from a mixture of goat’s and cow’s milk and eaten with a red hot sauce.
