Discover Mulhouse by Hire Car

Mulhouse, or Mulhouse in German, is the second largest city after Strasbourg in the whole of Alsace in the eastern part of France, with 230,000 inhabitants in an area of just over 22 square kilometres.

This makes it geographically located right in the border triangle between Germany, France and Switzerland.

Sights in Mulhouse

The town was founded in 803 with the construction of a mill, which also gave Mulhouse its name. Throughout its history, the city belonged to Switzerland as well as Germany.

The historic centre of Mulhouse, which is divided into an upper and lower town, is rather small compared to its total area, which did not develop until the age of industrialisation. A marginal part of the lower town, where there are still some houses from the Middle Ages around the Place de la Reunion, is the St. Stephen’s Church. The most imposing part of the ‘Temple Saint-Etienne’, as the neo-Gothic building is also called, is the 97-metre-high bell tower. This masterful construction was built between 1858 and 1868 on the ruins of a 12th century church. The Upper Town, on the other hand, was built in the 13th century and was essentially reserved for various monastic orders.

While the Vineyard district stands out for its colonial-style mansions of the American South, dating back to the period of economic links between Mulhouse and Louisiana, the Quartie de la Cit? saw the creation of France’s first working-class housing estate in 1953.
