València – Vibrant city with a long history

Valencia in Spain is the capital of the autonomous region and province of the same name.

Its long history, the many sights but also the numerous bars and restaurants make València a tourist attraction.

Here you can stroll through the museums in the morning, stroll through the old town in the afternoon, enjoy the best Spanish specialties in the evening and then turn the night into day in a club, discotheque or bar.

The charming surrounding countryside can be excellently explored by hire car. We have put together a few tips for renting and travelling.

Taking over the hire car

Some rental companies can be found directly in the terminal of Valencia Airport. Others, however, have their station only in the vicinity of the airport. If you have booked there, you may have to wait a long time for a shuttle to take you to the station. Better find out where your rental company has its station before booking.

Finding the right car

In Valencia, the traffic rages and in the surrounding villages, the roads can be very narrow. It’s better to book a small car that will get you through with ease and make it easier to find a parking space.

Hire car prices

During the low season, you can get hire cars in Valencia at surprisingly cheap rates. If it gets too cheap, however, you should read the fine print. Mostly there are hidden costs which have to be paid on the spot. So the supposed bargain can turn into a real cost trap. Offers of which we think that they offer a very good price-performance ratio, we have marked with the note “Excellent offer”.

Insuring the car properly

Even in the turbulent city traffic of Valencia, a small accident can happen quickly. Protect yourself and insure your hire car with comprehensive insurance without deductible. With liability insurance, you should make sure that the sum insured is at least one million euros. Because if people are injured in an accident, it quickly becomes very expensive. If the liability of your hire car seems too low, you can take out a Mallorca policy and thus provide additional protection. Talk to your insurance company.

Remember the tank regulation

Often rental companies in Valencia require you to buy the first tank of fuel for a so-called service fee. For this you can then return the car empty. Since you always pay more with such offers than if you would fill up yourself, you should choose a rental company where you take over the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank.

age limit

Drivers under the age of 21 will not normally be given a car in Valencia. On to drivers over 75, many companies will not lend cars. Drivers under 25 are often charged an additional fee. And some rental companies even charge extra if the driver is over 70. Be sure to inquire about your rental company’s terms before renting.

Accessories

You should reserve accessories such as a navigation device or child seat well in advance so that they are actually available when you pick up the hire car.

Language barrier

Not all staff at hire car stations speak fluent English. You can prevent misunderstandings if you note down the telephone number of the Spanish head office of your rental company before the trip. In emergencies, you will usually find a member of staff there who can provide translation assistance.

Free kilometers

If you only want to explore Valencia and the surrounding area, it may be cheaper for you to book a car with limited kilometres. However, if you want to travel to destinations further afield, it is recommended that you take a car with all kilometres free.

Bail

Be sure before renting the car that you rent from a rental company that only blocks the deposit on your credit card. This is because some providers actually charge off the amount and pay it back only after some delay after you return the car.

Customer Review Hire Car

Some customers complain that rental companies in Valencia have tried to sell them insurance that they already had. Always make sure that you have already adequately insured the car when you book it and refuse to take out any additional insurance on the spot. If the rental company then refuses to issue the car, you should contact your operator immediately and ask for clarification.

If no agreement is reached, you should have it confirmed in writing that you have taken out the insurance against your will. This is the only way you may have a chance of getting your money back. It is best if you read the customer reviews on this portal before booking to avoid getting a black sheep among the rental companies in the first place.

Safety hire car

Although most hire cars in Valencia are roadworthy, you should test the vehicle’s lights before your first trip. Don’t forget the indicators and brake light either. And do a brake test while still in the rental company’s parking lot. Scratches and dents do not affect the road safety of your hire car. Nevertheless, you should have all external defects on the vehicle confirmed in a defect report. This way, you will avoid being held liable for damage that you did not cause when you return the car.
