Discover Berlin by Hire Car

Berlin, the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany, with over 3 million inhabitants offers tourists numerous worth seeing destinations in the city, but also in the surrounding area.

And everything can be easily reached by hire car. For rental and travel we have compiled a few tips.

Receiving the hire car

It is easy to get a hire car at the airports Berlin Tegel and Berlin Schönefeld. In Tegel, the hire car centre is located on the lower level near Terminal E and car park P2. In Schoenefeld you will find the hire car center in front of the main terminal A.

When booking the car, however, make sure that you book with a rental company that also has its station in the hire car centre. After all, if it is only located near the terminal, you may have to wait for a shuttle and lose valuable time.

Finding the right hire car

Compared to other major German cities, the traffic in Berlin is still relatively relaxed. So you can choose a slightly larger and more comfortable car and still get through well.

Hire car prices

The hire car prices in Berlin are in the middle segment. You can usually get the cheapest deals if you reserve the car some time before your trip and use our handy rental price comparison.

Insuring the car properly

Especially in big cities, a small accident can happen quickly. Therefore, it is recommended to book a fully comprehensive insurance without deductible. So you are on the safe side in case of damage.

age limit

Some rental companies charge drivers younger than 25 an additional fee. Inquire about the conditions before renting the car.

Accessories

Maybe you want to camp in beautiful Brandenburg and need a roof rack. Or you want to make your trip easier with a navigation device. In this case, you should clarify with your rental company whether the desired items are also in stock and reserve in time.

Free kilometers

If you only want to travel around Berlin and the surrounding area, you might choose a cheaper rental with limited kilometres. However, if you’re planning to go on a big trip, we recommend renting a car with all kilometres free.

Then you can also choose delightful detours without having to anxiously look at the mileage gauge all the time.

Customer review

Most customers are satisfied with the rental companies in Berlin. Only some have complaints about long waiting times or damage to the vehicle that was not recorded in the error log. Inspect your rental vehicle thoroughly before you drive off.

And have all dents and scratches confirmed in a damage report. This is the only way to avoid being charged for damage you didn’t cause when you return the car.

To avoid getting one of the few black sheep among the rental companies, you should read the customer reviews on this portal before renting the vehicle.

Safety Hire Car

The TÜV ensures that you can assume that you will receive a safe hire car in Germany. Nevertheless, you should test the complete lighting of the vehicle before the first drive. And remember to check the brake light, too.

Bail

Only book with tour operators that only block the deposit amount on your credit card and do not actually charge it. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait for the amount to be charged back and available again after you return the car. And that can take a while.

Sights in Berlin

Experience history at the Brandenburg Gate
The most mobile way to travel is still by car, even though the public transport network is very well developed with S-Bahn, U-Bahn and buses.

The tourist center is located in Berlin-Mitte. Here, a stroll under the linden trees followed by a walk through the Brandenburg Gate is highly recommended.

Visit the Chancellor
Right next to the Brandenburg Gate is where political Berlin begins – with the Chancellery, the Houses of Parliament and the Reichstag, where the German Bundestag regularly meets today.

For those who don’t mind long lines during the day, be sure to plan a visit to the glass Reichstag dome, which incidentally costs no admission. There’s less of a rush in the evenings. Admission is until 10 pm, and the dome is open until midnight.

Shopping on the Kudamm
The second tourist center of Berlin is in the former western part of the city around the Memorial Church.

Here you will also find the two shopping streets Tauentzien and Kurfürstendamm, which is popularly known as “Kudamm” for short. With your hire car you can “cruise” up and down the kilometer-long Kudam.

Just off to Wannsee
Outside the urban centre of Berlin, Wannsee and the Grunewald forest in the south of the city offer holidaymakers relaxation in nature.

With a hire car, a day trip to neighboring Potsdam is also worthwhile. Here a walk in the park and a visit to Sanssouci Palace is worthwhile.

Suggestion of a round trip

Frankfurt an der Oder: Shopping paradise Poland
Take a trip to Frankfurt an der Oder first. In a good hour you are there.

In Frankfurt an der Oder, you can park your hire car and stroll over to the neighboring Polish town of Slubice.

There you will find a huge market where you can stroll to your heart’s content and shop cheaply.

Eisenhüttenstadt: Experience the history of the GDR
Next stop on a round trip could be Eisenhüttenstadt. The trip takes half an hour. In Eisenhüttenstadt, you can delve deep into the history of the GDR by visiting the Documentation Centre for Everyday Culture of the GDR.

As the name suggests, the exhibition is not dedicated to the political landscape but to the everyday life of people in the GDR. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Beeskow: Journey to the Middle Ages
Before you steer the hire car back to Berlin, you should make a stop in Beeskow. Again, you should allow half an hour for the drive. In Beeskow, a castle awaits you that was built as early as 1272 and brings the medieval times back to life.

From April to September, you can visit the castle from Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 19:00. During the winter months, it is open from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

conclusion

Berlin is not only poor but sexy but dazzling and fascinating. And also the surrounding area has its charms and can be explored excellently with a hire car.

With our price comparison you will always find a cheap offer and the right car for you.
