Sights in Munich

Churches and museums
In the Bavarian capital there are enough sights. The Frauenkirche in the old town determines the silhouette of the city. With the Deutsches Museum, the city has the largest natural science museum in Central Europe. The museum is located directly on the Isar river, whose meadows invite you to sunbathe in the summer. The Pinakotheken in Schwabing are also world-class art museums.

The world’s largest folk festival
World famous is the Oktoberfest, which opens its doors for three weeks in September and October, attracting over six million visitors during this time. Apart from what has become the largest folk festival in the world, there are countless small and large beer gardens in the city where visitors can experience original Bavarian traditions.

Relaxation in the Park
Munich has two huge parks in the city area. The English Garden, one of the largest parks in the world, is best known for the Chinese Tower. The Olympic Park has only existed in this form since the 1972 Summer Olympics, which were held in Munich. Especially impressive is a trip to the Olympic Tower. From here, the visitor can overlook the whole city. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Alps, which then form a magnificent backdrop to the city.

Sights in the surrounding area

Neuschwanstein: Experience a fairytale castle
A first trip with a hire car could take you to Neuschwanstein. You can be there in less than two hours. Neuschwanstein is the magnificent castle that the Bavarian King Ludwig II had built for himself from 1869. Already the facade of the castle reminds more of a Disney movie with Snow White than of Upper Bavaria. Inside, the splendor continues.

Whether it’s a Gothic-style bedroom or a magnificent throne room, Ludwig II loved it opulent. You should plan at least half a day to visit the palace. From 28 March to 15 October, the palace is open from 09:00 to 18:00. During the winter months, you can visit it from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Regular admission costs 12 euros.

Murnau: Art and Nature
From Neuschwanstein, it is only a short one-hour drive to Murnau. It was not for nothing that the Blauer Reiter group of painters met there at the beginning of the 20th century, who appreciated the dreamlike landscape. Many of their works can be admired in the castle museum. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. The entrance fee is 4,50 Euro. After your visit to the museum, you can enjoy nature on a walk in the Murnauer Moos.

Starnberg: It smiles the lake, he invites you to bathe
Before you go back to Munich, you can still make a stop in Starnberg. There you can take a dip in the lake during the summer and take long walks along the shore during the rest of the time. Children will appreciate the water park.

In winter, this is an indoor pool with gorgeous views of the lake. In summer, the doors open and the indoor pool becomes an outdoor pool with direct lake access. A half-hour drive now separates you from the Bavarian capital, where you might plan your next round trip over a Maß of beer at the legendary Hofbräuhaus.
