Exploring SACRAMENTO WITH A HIRE CAR

The capital of the state of California, Sacramento has a population of about 480,000 and is located on the Sacramento River.

In 1848, Sacramento originated as a small gold mining settlement during the Gold Rush, but was declared a city by 1850.

The city quickly developed into a major commercial center, helped by railroad construction and the establishment of food and textile industries.

With a historic downtown, numerous museums, good restaurants and lovely bars that often feature live music, Sacramento offers a colorful array of experiences. And there is also much to discover in the surrounding area. This can be done easily by hire car.

VIEWS TO SEE IN SACRAMENTO

The magnificent State Capitol is a good point to start the city walk. It was built between 1861 and 1874 and stands out with its neoclassical facade. The Capitol Museum is located in this building. The exhibition gives a good overview of the history of the state of California. The museum is open from Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. On weekends, you can visit it from 9:00 am. Admission to the museum is free.

After your visit, you will have the opportunity to travel back in time to the Wild West and stroll through Old Sacramento. There you will find numerous historic buildings that have been carefully restored in recent years. You can also drive through the neighborhood in a horse-drawn carriage. Or you can see it from the Sacramento River by boarding one of the boats that double as restaurant boats. Afterwards, you’ll have a chance to enjoy a cool drink in one of the many saloons.

The railroad had an important function in the conquest of the American West. You can learn details about this period by viewing historic railroads and rail cars at the California State Railroad Museum. The museum is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. A ticket costs ten dollars.

Take you into the world of space travel at the Discovery Museum. In this building, also called Sience & Space Center, there is also a planetarium. The show lasts 20 minutes and shows you the Californian starry sky. The museum is open daily in July and August from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. During the rest of the months, you can visit it Tuesday through Friday from noon to 4:30 p.m. and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The planetarium opens its doors at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm on weekends only. Admission to the museum is six dollars.

To finish off your stroll around town, it’s worth visiting Sutter’s Fort. There you are in a fort from the year 1839. Especially in the summer it is easy to go back to old times. Then extras in historical robes stroll through the complex. You can visit the fort daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. A ticket costs five dollars.
