It’s best to start your tour at St. Louis’ landmark, the Gateway Arch. It symbolizes the city’s importance as a gateway to the West and impresses with its massive dimensions. Afterwards, you have the option of boarding one of the Gateway Arch Riverboats, and enjoying the view of the city from the river.

You’ll learn a lot about man’s best friend when you visit the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog. From ceramic figurines to historic paintings, you’ll find everything about dogs. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and on Sunday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Admission is five dollars.

If you want to take a little break from the hustle and bustle of the city, you can visit Forest Park with its mature trees and take a relaxing stroll along well-maintained trails. Forest Park is also where you’ll find the St. Louis Art Museum. It features an extensive art collection with over 30,000 exhibits from around the world. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Friday, you can visit it until 9:00 pm. Admission to the museum is free.

Also in Forest Park is the city’s zoo. Here you can marvel at zebras, giraffes, snakes and a variety of other animals. Most of the zoo is free to enter. However, there are some attractions for which fees are charged, such as the sea lion show. The zoo is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

No stay in the city is complete without a visit to a bar with live music. You have a good chance of catching a concert at the Old Rock House, for example, where bands perform very often.

Finding a good restaurant in St. Louis is no problem. Maybe make a reservation at Broadway Oyster Bar and enjoy fresh seafood and traditional Cajun dishes.

Afterwards, you’ll have the opportunity to board the Mark Twain Riverboat for a one-hour tour of the Mississippi River. As the riverbank leisurely passes by, you’ll have plenty of time to consider which destinations around St. Louis you’d like to explore next in your hire car.
