Exploring DETROIT BY HIRE CAR

Detroit in the state of Michigan is the quintessential car city, hence its nickname “The Motor City” or “Motown” for short.

It was founded in the early 1700s, back when cars were still a foreign word, by a Frenchman named “Cadillac.”

Even though the once-rich city recently had to declare bankruptcy, Detroit is still a worthwhile destination, with numerous museums, beautiful parks and good restaurants.

And there are plenty of scenic spots to explore in the surrounding countryside, all easily accessible by hire car.

THINGS TO SEE IN DETROIT

Perhaps start your city stroll at the Motown Museum. The legendary record company Motown was founded in these buildings and managed to attract stars like Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson or Diana Ross. In the museum you can relive the glorious past of the record label. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Tickets are ten dollars.

Next stop on the city stroll might be the Wright Museum of African American History. The exhibit provides a comprehensive overview of the cruel era of slavery. Additionally, you will learn about the cultural and economic achievements of the black population in the United States. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Sunday, you can visit it from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Tickets are $8.

Today, Detroit is impoverished, but the city was once among the richest places in the United States. Detroit had the booming auto industry to thank for this high. The exhibition at the Henry Ford Museum provides information about these golden years. To visit it, you’ll have to leave Detroit and drive to the suburb of Dearborn, 16 kilometers away. The museum is open daily from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. Tickets cost $17.

The good old days come alive again when you then visit the Village, located near the museum. There, you’ll stroll through a pretty collection of old houses that were brought here from all over the country and rebuilt. You can also get a ride through the streets in a vintage car. A ticket costs $24. From April 15 to November 3, the museum is open daily from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. From November 8 through December 1, you can visit the Village Friday through Sunday only. It is closed during the winter months.

Henry Ford’s success was based in large part on the invention of mass production. You can see how products are created on the assembly line on the Rouge Factory Tour. Witness how Ford F-150 pickup trucks are built. You can take the Factory Tour Monday through Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. The last tour departs at 3:00 pm. A ticket costs $12.75.

Back in Detroit, you have the opportunity to visit an interesting collection of modern art at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The museum is open Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. On Friday, you can visit the exhibition from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm. On weekends, it is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Tickets are eight dollars.

FIND A GOOD RESTAURANT

The city may be poor, but good restaurants can still be found. We recommend Green Dot Stables. There you can get typical American burgers and sandwiches of high quality at reasonable prices.

FINDING A GOOD HOTEL

Find a good hotel, too. When you book your room at the Detroit Marriot, be sure to specify that you want to stay as high up as possible when you book. Then you will not only enjoy your stylish and very comfortable room, but also a sensational view over the city. The hotel has 78 floors.

A REWARDING DESTINATION IN THE SURROUNDINGS

Should you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, you can steer the hire car to Ann Arbor. In this quiet college town, you can stroll through the quaint downtown area, pick up original souvenirs in small shops, and then stroll through a pretty landscaped garden at the Mathei Botanical Garden. On the way back to Detroit, you can think about what destinations you want to head to next in your hire car.
