Road trip Denmark – much to see in a small space

Copenhagen – Lively Capital

You should start your round trip in Copenhagen. This is where the heart of Denmark beats. The most important cultural sights are gathered here. And you will also be captivated by the lively city life. Start your tour at the National Museum. Here you can get an excellent overview of Danish history and get in the mood for your stay in the country. Your next destination could be the Vor Frue Kirke Cathedral, built in 1829 in neoclassical style

Take the opportunity to get out of Denmark without having to travel long distances. The free town of Christiana, a prime example of an alternative lifestyle since 1971, invites you to visit. The area was created after demonstrators occupied an abandoned military camp and proclaimed the Free City. All attempts by the Danish government to clear the area were subsequently unsuccessful. So the residents here continue to live by their own laws.

If you got hungry after your stroll through the city, we recommend Restaurant Amalie at Amaliegade 11, where you can expect traditional Danish cuisine. Maybe you could also get a table at Noma. But for that you need to have made a reservation well in advance of your trip. Many gourmets consider this restaurant the best in the world. This is where the new Nordic cuisine was born. Gourmets from all over the world fly to Copenhagen just to have eaten at Noma once.

To the Vikings

The next day you have the opportunity to travel far into the Nordic past. In Trelleborg, a Viking fortress that is over 1000 years old awaits you. First visit the museum and then wander through the huge complex. The fortress once housed a garrison of 500 soldiers.

Ribe – Charming Pearl in the South

The journey continues to Ribe. During the four-hour drive, you will have ample opportunity to admire the diversity of the Danish landscape. Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark. It was founded in 869 and the town of 8,000 inhabitants has retained much of the flair of its past. Stroll along the winding cobbled streets and marvel at the old half-timbered houses. Also take a look upwards. You will discover stork nests on the roofs of many houses.

You should end your day in Ribe with the night watchman tour. It starts at 20:00 or 22:00 from May to mid-October. It is best to enquire locally about the current times. The meeting point is in front of the Weis Stue hotel restaurant. The night watchman is now only a tourist attraction, but knows all kinds of things about the history of the city during the 45-minute tour. Back at the hotel, you then have the opportunity to plan the further stops on your road trip.
