Discover Mahon by Hire Car

In Mahon, as on the rest of the island, there is no sign of mass tourism. Since almost half of Menorca is protected, there are still many hidden coves and beautiful quiet beaches with crystal clear water.

So it’s definitely worth taking a hire car in Mahon from a hire car company and using it to explore the surrounding area.

With a hire car, you can then take trips to picturesque fishing villages and unspoilt coves at your leisure, enjoying the stunning scenery.

For rental and travel, we have put together a few tips for you.

Receiving the hire car

Many rental agencies can be found right by the terminal. Just follow the signs or ask at the information desk. However, there are also providers whose station is only near the airport. In this case, a shuttle will usually take you there. But since it can often take quite a while until the shuttle appears, it is usually better to book with a rental company at the airport.

Taking the right hire car

Even in the villages of Menorca, the roads are often quite narrow. So that you can get through everywhere well, we recommend taking a smaller car. However, before booking, think about how much luggage you want to take with you on the trip. Many a holidaymaker has only discovered on the spot that the boot of the hire car was far too small for the luggage they had brought with them.

Hire car prices

Out of peak season, you can often get a hire car in Mahon at surprisingly reasonable rates. It’s a completely different story during the holidays, when the crowds of tourists invade the island. If you are on the road with an unknown car on the narrow roads of the island, an accident can happen quickly. With a comprehensive insurance without deductible you are well insured in such a case. The coverage of the liability should be at least one million euros. You can find more details in our special on the subject of insurance.

age limit

Many rental companies won’t rent cars to drivers younger than 21. And some charge additional fees from drivers under 25. Check out your rental company’s terms and conditions before renting the car.

Accessories

You should order accessories such as a navigation device or child seat well in advance so that the items are available on the day you pick up your car.

Language barrier

Since not all Spaniards speak perfect English, it can be helpful to write down the phone number of your rental company’s head office in Spain. There you can ask for translation help if need be.

Free kilometers

Although Menorca is quite manageable, a lot of kilometres add up quickly when exploring the island. Book a hire car with free kilometers.

Customer Review Hire Car

Although most customers are happy with the rental companies in Mahon, some complain that they were tried to sell them additional insurances. Insure the car at the time of booking and then consistently refuse to take out any additional insurance locally.

Also, before driving, inspect your car closely for defects such as scratches or dents, and get a written record of any faults. And read customer reviews about the various rental companies before booking to avoid getting a black sheep in the first place.

Safety hire car

Traffic-safe hire cars are the norm in Mahon. Nevertheless, before your first drive, check the car’s lights and do a little brake test in the parking lot.

Bail

Be sure to rent from a rental company that only blocks the deposit due on your credit card. After all, if the rental company actually collects the amount, it can take a long time to get the money back in your account after you return the vehicle.
