Discover Galway by Hire Car

The university town of Galway is located on the west coast of Ireland and is about 3 hours from the capital Dublin by hire car.

With a population of about 72,000, Galway is the third largest city in Ireland and also the youngest due to a student population of 20%.

However, there is no sign of the size of this up-and-coming city in the city centre. Here you have rather the feeling to be in a contemplative small town.

Galway is also rightly called the cultural capital or even the most Irish city in Ireland.

Leisure Activities in Galway

In the pedestrian streets of the restored historic city centre you will find numerous shops and boutiques that invite you to an extensive shopping tour. In the evening, you can get to know the typical Irish attitude to life in the many cosy pubs here.

But things are a little less cosy in Galway during the first week of August, when the famous annual Galway Horse Racing Festival takes place. Quite a few people from Ireland as well as abroad come to this festival.

Sights in Galway

Whoever visits Galway, however, should not miss the nearby Cliffs of Moher in addition to sights of the city, such as Lynchs Castle or St. Nicholas Church.

Another popular destination is Connemara, arguably the most unspoilt part of Ireland, where you can experience the unique unspoilt beauty of nature.

These destinations can be reached either by guided bus tour, or on your own with a hire car.

While the left-hand traffic takes some getting used to, this way you always have the option to stop in between to explore the surroundings.
