Road Trip South Africa, Namibia
Cape Town
Let’s go in the metropolis of South Africa, in Cape Town. The hire car is picked up at the airport and parked at the hotel. Already one of the most exciting metropolises of the world can be conquered. Perhaps you start the day with a small mountain tour. From Table Mountain, the landmark of the city, you have a fantastic view. Take a pair of binoculars and decide where to go now. The snow-white beaches look enticing.
But you’ll probably plunge into city life first. And that’s something to behold. Cape Town literally vibrates with joie de vivre. Restaurants from all over the world attract as well as modern galleries and colorful markets. You should plan two days to get an impression of Cape Town, but then you have to move on. The wilderness is calling.
The West Coast
Along the West Coast the road leads towards Namibia. The sea is never far away and dreamlike, often deserted beaches tempt you to swim.
The National Park
But the real destination is the Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. This very pristine national park impresses with spectacular nature and a variety of animal species.
With a little luck, baboons, mountain zebras or even leopards can be observed.
Over the border if the papers are right
Since the park is located in the border area and belongs to both Namibia and South Africa, the step into the neighbouring country is now not far. And if you have found a solid hire car company, you should not have any problems at the border station. The customs officers will ask you for a document in which the hire car company confirms that they are allowed to enter Namibia with their vehicle. So before you start your trip, always remember to inform the rental company about your travel plans and ask for the relevant document.
Since the rental company has to insure his vehicle additionally for Namibia in this case, additional costs may apply. When picking up the vehicle, make sure that your car has the ZA sticker for South Africa, otherwise you will be fined. Additional costs are incurred for the road toll in Nambia. At the moment this is about 10 Euros. And if you want to drop off the car in Windhoek to fly back from there, there will be another hefty surcharge for the one-way rental. To avoid such surprises, you should rent the car in advance and ask for the actual final price.
Namibia – Land of the Wild
Once in Namibia, you will not come out of the amazement. Partly deserted stretches of land await the visitor. The wilderness of Africa accompanies the traveler at every turn. Everywhere you will come across animals that you might know from the zoo. After all, Namibia is considered to be the most species-rich country on earth. And the topography is also impressive. From the Namibian desert to the Brandberg with its 2,573 metres, the landscape offers an amazing variety.
Safety first
Finally, a few important tips. Especially in cities, you should make sure that your vehicle is always locked from the inside while driving. When stopping at traffic lights, gangs of thieves are always opening the doors or the boot to steal items from vehicles.
Avoid driving at night, the risk of accidents then increases enormously. The number of robberies also increases at night. Do not stop at abandoned rest areas. Here, too, robberies occur again and again. Drive on if vehicles with a supposed breakdown are standing at the side of the road. However, you should always inform the police if there was actually an emergency situation. If you heed these warnings, always drive carefully and rely on your common sense in unfamiliar situations, nothing will stand in the way of a dream holiday.
