Discover Ostrava by Hire Car
In the border triangle of the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia lies the city of Ostrava, which is also called Ostrava in the local language.
The second largest city in the Czech Republic, located just 10 kilometers from the Polish border, it was once known as the Moravian Gate.
Ostrava takes its name from the river of the same name, which is joined here by no less than four others, the Lucina, the Odra, the Oppa and the Ostrawitzka.
Development of Ostrava
Located on the Amber Road, which was an important trade route between northern and southern Europe even in Roman times, its first settlement dates back to the Stone Age. The nature reserve adjacent to the city of Ostrava is internationally renowned as a Stone Age site.
First Slavic tribes settled here in the Ostrava Basin as early as the 10th century. Raided and plundered several times over the course of time by Cossacks or Napoleon’s henchmen, or struck down by the plague that carried off half the population in 1715, it did not acquire significant economic importance until the early 19th century.
After coal discoveries some 100 years earlier, the Rothschilds founded the Witkowitz ironworks here, which made Ostrava the centre of the coal and steel industry.
Unfortunately, due to this fact, the town also became the target of many air raids during the Second World War.
Sights in Ostrava
Worth seeing today, however, are the remains of the Premsylidenburg “Höhe Landek” and the cathedral of Ostrava.
Since the city of Ostrava with its more than 300,000 inhabitants is spread over 42 districts, and especially the surrounding countryside has extremely interesting things to offer, a hire car is recommended during your stay.
