Sights in Valladolid
Even today, the charm of this period can be felt in this elegant town with its imposing buildings, and the city’s university, which has existed since the 14th century, is the fourth most important in the Spanish Republic. The city was first mentioned in documents in the tenth century, when it was occupied by the Moors.
The centre of Valladolid is most impressive for its spacious plazas, some of which are lined with monumental grand buildings with shady porticoes and arches. A beautiful example of this is the Plaza Mayor, where the Ayuntamiento town hall is located. The square is considered the model for the place of the same name in Madrid and the entire Spanish-speaking world. The enchanting ambience is complemented by small shops, bars and restaurants. With the Plaza de Zorilla and its spacious area adorned by a multitude of picturesque water fountains, Valladolid’s downtown area begins, most of which is designed by pedestrian zones, making it a wonderful place to stroll.
In the midst of the hustle and bustle of Valladolid, peace and quiet can be found in Campo Grande, an idyllic park near the bus station. In the immediate vicinity is also the Colon Museum, the Columbus Museum, which above all reminds us that the famous explorer died here on 20 May 1505.
