Sights in Seville
Picturesque Seville, with its numerous towers located mainly in the city’s medieval curtain wall, spreads out on both sides of the imposing Guadalquivir River, with the centre on the eastern bank.
One of Seville’s highlights is certainly the romantic old town of Andalusia’s capital. Narrow alleys wind labyrinthine around squares steeped in history, spreading an oriental flair. This is also the case of the Quemadero, which reveals a sad chapter in the history of Sevilla. It was here that the cruel sentences of the church were carried out during the Inquisition, the so-called autodafés.
Of Seville’s monuments, the Gothic cathedral of Maria de la Sede is one of the most important. It is the third largest church in the world after St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The five-aisled building with priceless sacral art treasures was built in the 15th century on the ruins of a mosque. No less imposing is the freestanding, 97-metre-high, bell tower known as the Giralda.
A fantastic example of Moorish architecture in Seville is the Alcázar, a palace with fantastic halls and rooms built in 1364. Seville is best explored with a hire car.
