Discover Playa del Ingles by hire car
Playa del Ingles, translated: Beach of the English, is a tourist stronghold on the south coast of the Canary Island of Gran Canaria.
Together with San Augustin and Maspalomas, Playa del Ingles forms the largest tourist centre in the Kingdom of Spain.
The town is part of the municipality of San Bartolome de Tirajana, whose historic core lies some 23 kilometres further inland.
The resort takes its name from the original intention to accommodate only English tourists here, but this was quickly abandoned.
Leisure activities in Playa del Ingles
Until the 1960s, all there was in Playa del Ingles was rocks and desert. Then the tourist potential was discovered and the building frenzy began. Today there are countless hotels, cafes, restaurants and bars here, making Playa del Ingles a lively, turbulent experience all year round, by day and by night. During the day, holidaymakers from all over the world flock to the island’s beautiful sandy beaches, and at night, the squares around the Paseo Costa Canario in particular, lined with luxurious villas and magnificent plants, are transformed into a veritable disco landscape. Party-hungry people get their money’s worth here until the early hours of the morning.
Shopping in Playa del Ingles
For those who get bored on the beach, Playa del Ingles offers endless shopping opportunities. In addition to the colourful bazaars in the centre of the town with all kinds of souvenirs, there are also several large shopping centres, such as the Kasbah in the Plaza del Teide or the Yumbo Center in the Avenida de Espana.
With a hire car, you also have the opportunity to visit the dune area of Maspalomas, which has been a nature reserve since 1987 and extends to the El Charco lagoon.
