The entire old town of Oviedo is designated as a pedestrian area and passes many picturesque squares, historical statues and buildings. These include the church of San Tirso or the Museum of Archaeology around the San Vincente Monastery. In the latter you get a good overview of the art history of Asturias since the Bronze Age with several exhibits from different places of worship of the region. With a hire car, you can also reach the churches of San Miguel de Lillo and Santa Maria del Naranco from the ninth century in a short time, which, along with the aforementioned relics, belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The old town centre is strikingly separated from modern Oviedo by the town’s university. Here you can reach the city’s shopping districts via Calle Uria, but also the Teatro Campoamor, which once a year is the meeting place for international science and sport when the Prince of Asturias Prize is awarded here.
