Discover Nerja by Hire Car
Nerja, with a population of just under 20,000, is a small town in Andalusia, deep in the south of mainland Spain in the province of Malaga.
The first written mention of the town, which was once founded by the Moors, is around 917, and it got its name Nerja, meaning “rich water spring”, because of the numerous water springs in the place.
HISTORY AND PRESENT OF NERJA
The region was settled much earlier, however, as evidenced most notably by the caves of Nerja, where bones and tools, as well as impressive wall paintings from the Paleolithic period, were found in the 1950s. Today, the stalactite caves are a well-known tourist magnet and are among the most impressive show caves in all of Spain.
Much of the city was destroyed in an earthquake in 1884. So was an ancient Moorish fortress complex, from whose Balcon de Europa you had a fantastic view of the town and the bay of Nerja. Today, a life-size statue of Alfonso XII commemorates the quake and the king’s visit to the site. Meanwhile, this is a much visited place and the panorama is still picturesque. Also worth visiting is the old town of Nerja, with a monumental 18th-century church. About four kilometres east of the town centre you will also find the remains of a Roman aqueduct.
