Sights in Marbella
In the centre of Marbella lies the Plaza de los Narranjos, in typical Andalusian style with Moorish influence. It owes its name to the numerous orange trees that line the square and give it a unique scent. It is also home to the Marbella Archaeological Museum, with exhibits from Roman, Gothic and early Christian times. Otherwise, this is primarily where the city’s nightlife takes place, with narrow streets leading through the picturesque old town down to the Avenida del Mar, the romantic seafront promenade.
The Villa Romana settlement in Rio Verde is the main testament to the Roman era in Marbella. The Roman thermal baths from the second and third centuries are the centrepiece of the complex. With a hire car, Vega del Mar is also quickly reached, where there is an imposing, early Christian basilica with impressive vaults from the fourth century to marvel at. Not far from the church are also the remains of a Moorish fortress from the ninth century. Also worth a detour are the Rocks of Gibraltar, some 70 kilometres away.
