Discover Huelva by Hire Car

The Spanish city of Huelva is located in the south of Spain, in the autonomous region of Andalusia.

The city has around 140,000 inhabitants and is located on the Atlantic Ocean, at the mouth of the Odiel River.

West of Huelva, it lies on the Spanish-Portuguese border. The city did not grow rapidly until the 19th century, although it was founded by the Phoenicians in ancient times.

Huelva as a commercial city

Even then, Huelva was already a commercial city. Its rapid growth in the 20th century was due to the mineral resources found in the surrounding area. Huelva has a large port from which the region’s mineral resources and industrial products are exported all over the world.

Overall, Huelva is very modern, yet there are also places of tranquility in the city, such as the numerous parks. The city was completely rebuilt after an earthquake in 1755, so there are hardly any historic buildings left today.

What has been preserved is a Roman aqueduct, which still supplies Huelva with water to some extent. Not far from Huelva is also the Coto de Donana National Park.

The region around Huelva has a lot to offer: not far from the city begins an extensive beach landscape and in the hinterland of Huelva are numerous small, typical Spanish villages in which you can enjoy the regional specialties. Among other things, the region is famous for its ham, which you should not miss.

Sights in Huelva

A city stroll could begin in the pedestrian zone. The many shops lend themselves to an extended shopping tour.

You should also visit the Museo Provincial. With the help of prehistoric finds, much can be learned here about mining in Roman times.

For example, you can admire an old water wheel that was used to drain the tunnels. The clay pit lamps are also an interesting rarity.

The oldest church in the city, the San Predro Church, was built between the 15th and 16th centuries and impresses with its harmonious exterior. And in the “Barrio Obrero Reina Victoria” you can even take a trip to England.

Here, the British-run mining company built an English-style residential district in 1917 so that employees could feel at home.

Find the special restaurant

Since there are few tourists in Huelva, restaurant owners need many regulars to make good sales.

So the chefs have to work hard, which benefits the diner. Visit “Restaurante Las Meigas.”

Here, fine cuisine is served in a pleasant ambience. The chefs celebrate a mix of styles from Galician and Andalusian cuisine.

The restaurant is open from 1pm to 4pm and from 8pm to 11pm. Sundays are a day of rest.

Find a good hotel

As many tourists prefer other destinations, the city’s hotels tend to cater to business travellers and present themselves in a suitably sober fashion. We recommend the NH Luz Huelva. The modernly furnished rooms are comfortable. All have air conditioning, minibar, satellite TV and Wi-Fi.

Exploring the surroundings

Visit the place Punta Umbria. Here you can enjoy real Spanish holiday feeling in summer.

Foreign tourists hardly show up, in the high season the place is firmly in Spanish hands. Nevertheless, Punta Umbria is not a pure holiday paradise.

Fishermen still go to sea and sell their freshly caught goods in the fish auction hall. Enjoy a drink in one of the many beach bars or satisfy your appetite in a tapas bar.

Should you wish to stay overnight, you can shake a leg in a disco and find that for Spaniards, a holiday day doesn’t end until the early morning.

Ayamonte – Music hours in the old town

Ayamonte, a charming town with a population of around 18,000, is also easy to reach by hire car. From Huelva you will need about an hour’s drive.

Ayamonte impresses with its charming old town. Many of the narrow streets are pedestrian zones. Here you can stroll relaxed and buy holiday souvenirs in one of the numerous shops.

You should also take a look at the church Iglesia de San Francisco. It was built in the 15th century. The simple interior exerts a special charm. The restaurant Casa Barberi is recommended for gourmets. It was founded in 1917 and specialises in rice dishes.
