Hire car Girona

Girona – Holiday destination in the heart of Catalonia

Girona is a Spanish city in the northeast of Catalonia. About 80,000 inhabitants live in Girona, which has a lot to offer. In the old town you can go strolling to your heart’s content.

On splendid boulevards you can go on extensive shopping tours. And in the many restaurants, lovers of Catalan cuisine will get their money’s worth.

The surrounding area of the city is also very attractive and can be explored with a hire car. We have put together a few tips for rental and travel.

Taking over the hire car

Some hire car agencies can be found right inside the terminal at Girona Airport. Just follow the signs. However, you should make sure that your hire car company also has its station in the terminal.

If he only works near the airport, it is quite possible that you will have to wait a long time for a shuttle to take you to your hire car.

Choosing the right hire car

The traffic in Girona is turbulent, parking spaces are often scarce. With a small and manoeuvrable car, you can easily get through everywhere and park your car even in small gaps.

Hire car prices

You can often get hire cars in Girona at extremely cheap rates. However, if a car is offered too cheaply, you should study the rental company’s terms and conditions carefully.

Often you will find hidden costs that turn the supposed bargain into a very expensive offer. Cars, which are offered in our eyes at a very good price-performance ratio, we have marked with the note “Excellent offer”.

Insurance

Just in the hustle and bustle of Girona’s city traffic, it’s easy to have a little accident.

If you have rented a car with comprehensive insurance without excess, you are well covered in case of an accident.

With liability, you should make sure that the coverage amount is at least one million euros. Because if people are injured in an accident, such a sum is quickly reached.

age limit

Practically all hire car companies in Girona only lend their cars to drivers who are at least 21 years old. Drivers under 25 often have to pay an additional fee.

And drivers over 75 are often not rented a car either. Check out the rental company’s terms and conditions before booking. You’ll find them under “Rental Terms and Conditions.”

Tank control

Often hire car companies in Girona oblige their customers to buy the first tank of fuel from the rental company for a service charge. The car can then be returned empty. However, the purchased tank of fuel is always significantly more expensive than if you had filled up the car yourself.

And you will not succeed in returning the car completely empty. That’s why we recommend renting from rental companies where you take the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank. This is the most transparent solution for everyone.

Accessories

If you need accessories in Girona, such as a navigation device or child seats, you should order the desired items well in advance. This is the only way to be sure that your accessories will be available on the day you pick up your vehicle.

Language barrier

In Girona, you may well find that a member of staff at your rental company speaks poor English. To be on the safe side, make a note of the telephone number of your hire car company’s Spanish head office before you travel. There you can ask for translation help in case of need.

Free kilometers

If you only want to travel around Girona and the surrounding area in your hire car, you may be able to book a cheaper car with limited mileage. However, if you want to go to destinations further afield, you should make sure that all kilometres are free with your hire car.

Bail

Look for a rental company that only blocks the deposit due on your credit card. After all, if the money is actually collected, it may take longer for the amount to be returned to your account after the car is returned.

Customer Satisfaction Hire Car

Most of the customers are very satisfied with the hire car in Girona. Some complain that there was no safety equipment such as first aid kits and safety vests in the car.

Since these are required by law in Spain, you can and should insist that the missing equipment is obtained. Do not drive off without safety equipment under any circumstances. Because if you get into a traffic control, or have an accident, it will be really expensive for you.

Safety hire car

Although hire cars in Girona are usually in very good condition, you should still check the lights before your first drive. Also, do a little brake test in the parking lot.

Sights in Girona

Arab Baths: 13th-century bathing site

Start your stroll at the Arab baths. They were built in the 13th century and offer a good insight into the bathing pleasures of times gone by.

Archeological Museum: fascinating tombstones

In the archaeological museum you can deepen your knowledge of the history of the city and its surroundings. The collection of ancient tombstones is particularly interesting.

Cathedral: Enchanting stained glass

After that, it’s worth visiting the cathedral. Given the mighty structure, it’s not surprising that construction began in 1314, but it took nearly 300 years to complete the cathedral.

Most of all, you will be amazed by the beautiful stained glass inside the church. Afterwards, you might want to climb the city wall, which you will find just behind the cathedral. From its crown you have a magnificent view over the city and the surrounding countryside.

Jewish quarter: stroll and relax

Now it’s time to explore the Jewish Quarter. Just stroll aimlessly through the narrow streets and discover a nice wine bar here or a small shop with original merchandise there. For a breather, head to the Parc de la Devesa, the largest city park in Catalonia.

Girona offers a variety of restaurants. Many of them have typical Catalan dishes on the menu. We recommend La Penyora.

It is located in the old town, is stylishly decorated and offers fantastic cuisine with the best products. Book well in advance, the place is not very big and often fully booked.

Find the special hotel

Visit the Hotel Historic in the old town. All rooms are individually and very tastefully decorated and offer upscale comfort. The atmosphere of the old house will charm you immediately.

Sant Feliu de Guíxols: Charming old town

It’s only a short half-hour drive by hire car from Girona to Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

Here, beautiful beaches await you, but also a small town with an enchanting old town centre. First visit the market hall on the Plaça del Mercat.

It was built in 1929. To this day, everything the city’s inhabitants need to live is traded here. Especially the fish stalls with their freshly caught goods are more than worth a look. Steer your steps also to the hermitage of Sant Elm.

From here, the views over the town and coast are sheer breathtaking. Now you can simply stroll through the old town towards the harbour. You will surely find a nice restaurant where you can enjoy the specialties of the region.

Lloret de Mar: European party metropolis

In the evening, it’s party time. Visit the resort of Lloret de Mar as young people from all over Europe do. From Sant Feliu de Guíxols you need again only half an hour. The young people in Lloret de Mar don’t want to relax, they want to party. And that works there quite excellently.
