History of Tata
During the Turkish Wars, the castle of Tata was an important defensive bulwark against the Ottomans.
After the Turks were finally driven out in the 18th century, it became the private property of the Hungarian dynasty of the Counts of Esterhazy, and Tata became the centre of the region around the Hungarian Lake District, which was almost entirely owned by the family.
Sights in Tata
Today, the castle can be visited, as well as the buildings in downtown Tata, which are mainly built in the Baroque architectural style. Such as the parish church or the monastery of the Piarists.
Very impressive is also the English Park, which completely surrounds Lake Cseke, the castle of Count Esterhazy with its large parks and the guest castle inside.
This cultural legacy of the Counts of Esterhazy is what Tata owes its bustling tourist trade, which many of the city’s 24,000 or so inhabitants now use as their main source of income.
The landscape around Tata, which consists of many lakes and is also often referred to as the “Hungarian Tuscany”, impresses with its beautiful and species-rich nature and is very popular with hikers.
