Discover Szekszard by Hire Car
Szekszard is a county town in southern Hungary. It is the centre of the wine-growing region of the same name, on the slopes of which wine was successfully cultivated as early as Roman times around the birth of Christ.
The famous red wine Szekszard Bull’s Blood comes from this area. A large proportion of Szekzard’s population of around 36,000 are employed in this industry.
However, tourism, gastronomy, service and industry are also among gainful employment sectors with many employees.
Next to vineyards and the local wineries, which often invite to convivial wine tastings, the region also has a handsome number of cultural treasures.
Sights in Szekszard
In Szekszard there are many buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, which are built in the Austro-Hungarian architectural style and unmistakably show the centuries-old relations with Austria.
The most prominent of these is the 18th-century Holy Trinity Church and the early 19th-century Catholic Church. Only the ruins of the former 11th-century monastery are one of the few exceptions.
In the vineyards lies a beautiful old chapel, which was once a place of pilgrimage. During his lifetime, the famous Hungarian composer and piano virtuoso Franz Liszt visited Szekszard very often. A music school was later founded in his honour and Szekszard is often the venue for Liszt concerts.
Leisure activities in Szekszard
Somewhat outside Szekszard is the Gemenc Forest Nature Reserve.
The riparian forests of this area are home to rare fauna and flora and are among the most beautiful biotopes nationwide.
The surrounding area of the city can be explored very inexpensively with a hire car.
