DISCOVERING PITTSBURGH WITH A HIRE CAR

With a population of nearly two and a half million, including the suburbs, Pittsburgh is a huge metropolis covering more than 150 square miles in southwestern Pennsylvania on the U.S. East Coast.

Historic buildings, significant museums, beautiful parks as well as excellent restaurants add to Pittsburgh’s appeal. And there are also many places worth seeing in the surrounding area, which can be easily reached by hire car.

WHAT TO SEE IN PITTSBURGH

Andy Warhol, one of the most important American artists, saw the light of day in Pittsburgh. At the beginning of a city tour is therefore for many guests of the city the Andy Warhol Museum, in which many of his works are shown. The museum is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Friday, you can even visit the exhibition until 10:00 pm. The entrance fee is 20 dollars.

If you want to get an overview of the city, you can use the Monongahela Incline or the Dusquene Incline. These are historic funiculars that go to the top of Washington Hill. The Monongahela Incline was built in 1870. It was followed seven years later by the Dusquene Incline. A ticket costs $2.50.

Next on the city tour might be the Carnegie Museum of Art. The extensive exhibit includes works from French Impressionism to contemporary art. The museum is open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm from Monday to Saturday and even until 8:00 pm on Thursday. On Sunday, you can visit it from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Admission is $17.95.

Right next door, you’ll find the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Here, too, you can expect a comprehensive exhibition, in which you will encounter, for example, the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus. The collection is broadly themed anyway – from the wild animals of Africa to the mysteries of the polar world. The museum has the same hours as the Carnegie Museum of Art. Admission is also $17.95.

Maybe afterward you’ll feel like admiring a 1912 Rolls Royce at the magnificent Frick Art & Historical Center. You’ll find it on the grounds at the Car & Carriage Museum. But the art collection housed here is also worth the visit. Works from the early Renaissance and French paintings from the 18th century invite you to visit. The museums are open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. The entrance is free. Finally, you have the opportunity to visit one of the city’s beautifully landscaped parks, such as Schenley Park, which features a public swimming pool as well as a golf course.

Influences from all over the world make Pittsburgh a culinary adventure land. Maybe take a trip to Thailand and visit Nicky’s Thai Kitchen. There, you can expect superbly prepared specialties from the Land of Smiles.

FIND A BEAUTIFUL HOTEL

There’s no shortage of good hotels in Pittsburgh. We recommend the Omni William Penn Hotel. You’ll stay in a historic 1916 high-rise and enjoy the charm of days gone by as well as modern comforts.

A REWARDING DESTINATION IN THE SURROUNDINGS

Perhaps steer the hire car to Cleveland and take a trip into the world of rock ‘n’ roll. The drive will take you about two hours. In Cleveland, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum awaits you, where you can experience the history of such notable bands as the Rolling Stones and Beatles up close.

Artists such as Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix and Chuck Berry are also featured. Admission is $22. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and until 9 p.m. on Wednesday. On the way back to Pittsburgh, you will then have plenty of opportunity to plan the next tours with the hire car.
