Rönne, capital of the sunshine island of Bornholm in the far west, is the bustling cultural and economic centre of this Danish island.

There are 14,000 people living here. Local and German tourists in particular are always drawn to Rönne, and in summer there are regular ferry connections to all the Baltic Sea ports.

Sights in Rönne

This lively harbour town is dominated by St Nicholas Church as well as typical Bornholm half-timbered architecture, and is well worth more than just a day visit. Bornholm is the most forested region in Denmark, with a quarter of the island covered in mixed forest.

The largest forest, Almindingen, lies east of Rönne and covers 6,000 hectares. It is also the site of the island’s highest point, “Rytterknægten” (162 metres). The coast is rocky in many places: “Jons Kapel” or also the “Helligdoms” cliffs are formations worth seeing, which are worth a trip.

The beautiful, albeit narrow, beaches of Rönnes and north of the town are cleaned of seaweed daily during the bathing season. Bornholm’s attractions are all within easy reach by hire car.

Popular with young and old alike is the massive ruined castle of Hammershus in the northwest of the island. The four round churches located on Bornholm (there are seven in Denmark in total) are also worth a short round trip by car: Nykirke, Nylars Kirke, Sankt Ols Kirke as well as Österlars Kirke.

Rönne, like the whole island, is home to many craft studios and galleries; the opportunity to purchase a beautiful and practical souvenir of the trip is everywhere.

However, modern art has also found its place: Bornholm’s art museum in the east of the island, at 3,000 square metres, offers plenty of space to display it in the right setting.
