Road Trip USA – Part 1
Detroit
The trip starts in the north of the USA. In Detroit, we pick up our hire car after landing. Overseas flights to Detroit are often available for less than 500 euros. However, the traveler must then accept stopovers, so that the travel time can be over 20 hours.
The city’s luster has faded a bit. Detroit is often referred to as the capital of automobile manufacturing. However, the decline of the American auto industry caused unemployment to rise rapidly. The inner city became desolate, which can also be seen in the population figures. In the 50s, Detroit was still inhabited by almost two million people. Today, the population is 750,000.
Despite this, this city can also come up with some sights. A must-see tourist attraction is the Motown Museum. The Motown record company, founded in Detroit in 1958 and now based in Los Angeles, made music history. Stars like Diana Ross and Michael Jackson were signed to Motwon. The museum shows the company’s history. Car enthusiasts should not miss the Henry Ford Museum. Here you can experience the automotive history of the 20th century.
From Detroit to New York
The next day you continue through Ohio and Pennsylvania to New York. You should allow two days for the 900-kilometre route. The rural idyll of Pennsylvania makes the drive a relaxing experience. If you want to get a little taste of this state, you should watch the movie “And every day the groundhog says hello”. Hard to believe, but “Groundhog Day” really does exist here.
New York
Welcome to the Big Apple, the city that never sleeps. Three days should last the interruption of the trip at least to get at least a small impression of this cosmopolitan city. But first we have to park the hire car. As in the parking garage in the city centre, one is gladly charged up to 50 US Dollar per day, it is recommended to return the car and to rent a new car for the further trip. Now the city can be conquered. The sights in New York are so varied that every tourist will probably put together a different program. We recommend a visit to the Statue of Liberty, a walk on Broadway and a stroll through the Museum of Modern Art.
An important tip: Don’t take on too much. Stroll the streets and take in this unique city. This way you will avoid only seeing the sights while missing out on the real New York. And take advantage of public transportation. New York has an excellent subway network. You can reach almost any point in the city in a short time. The streets, on the other hand, are often so congested that nothing works at all. As fascinating as New York is, at some point you have to leave the city with a heavy heart and at the same time full of anticipation. Many other destinations beckon on the Road Trip USA.
