DISCOVERING TALLAHASSEE WITH A HIRE CAR
Tallahassee is a major American city in the north of the sunny state of Florida, with a population of just under 160,000 in an area of nearly 255 square kilometres.
Before Tallahassee was conquered by Spanish sailors in 1539, the land belonged to the Apalachee Indians, who also gave the region its name, which translates to “old city.”
In 1824, it then became the capital of Florida after the state joined the United States two years earlier.
Historic buildings, sprawling parks, pretty museums, and good restaurants and bars make Tallahassee a delightful destination. And there are plenty of picturesque towns in the surrounding area, too, which are perfectly accessible by hire car.
THINGS TO SEE IN TALLAHASSEE
You might want to start your stroll at the Visitor Centre. There you can stock up on up-to-date maps of the city and also find out what worthwhile events are taking place in the town in the near future. The first point of the city tour could be the Old Capitol. It was built in 1845 and impresses with its magnificent facade with its white columns. Inside you will find a historical museum. The exhibition offers a good insight into the political history of Florida. The museum is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. On Saturday, you can visit it starting at 10:00 am. On Sunday, the gates don’t open until 12:00 pm. Admission is free of charge.
The new Florida State Capitol is also worth the visit. It is 22 stories high and offers a grand view of the city and surrounding area from the observation deck. The Florida State Capitol can be visited Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free.
African American arts and crafts can be admired as you stroll to the Black Archives Research Center & Museum. But you’ll also learn a lot about the role African Americans played in science and the military, for example. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free.
The Mission San Luis also provides details about Florida history. There, you can recreate the time in the 18th century when Apalachee Indians and Spaniards lived here together. Extras in period garb bring the past back to life for tourists. The mission is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. A ticket costs five dollars.
At the end of your visit, you can explore the city’s green lung, the St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail. This trail, which is also used by cyclists and skaters, runs for 26 kilometres through the countryside. It is accessible daily from 8:00 am to sunset with free admission.

FIND A GOOD RESTAURANT
Friends of hearty American cuisine can seek out Andrew’s Capital Grill & Bar. It has been serving up excellent burgers and sandwiches since 1972.
FINDING A GOOD HOTEL
Not many tourists stay overnight in Tallahasse. So the number of good hotels is limited. We recommend the Inn at Park Avenue. In a historic building with only three guest rooms and two suites, the attentive staff will take the best care of you. Due to the small number of rooms and the reputation of the establishment, early reservations are highly recommended.
A REWARDING DESTINATION IN THE SURROUNDINGS
If you’re drawn to the ocean, you can steer the hire car to Panama City Beach. You’ll be there in just over two hours. In Panama City Beach, you can expect gorgeous beaches, good hotels and, between March and Easter, lots of American students who freely celebrate Spring Break there. The rest of the year it is much quieter and you can lie on the warm sand, enjoy the sun and think about which destination you would like to go to next with your hire car.
