Exploring SALT LAKE CITY BY RENT A CAR
Salt Lake City in the USA is the capital of the state of Utah. While the city core has a population of only 178,000, its metropolitan area is home to around one million people.
Salt Lake City is located in the “Salt Lake Valley” on the east coast of the “Great Salt Lake” and is enclosed from the east by the – up to 2000m high – peaks of the Wasatch mountain range and in the west by the Oquirrh mountain range.
The city hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Situated against the magnificent backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains, Salt Lake City is a diverse destination with its numerous museums, magnificent churches and beautiful parks. And there’s plenty to explore in the surrounding countryside, too. It’s easy to do this with your own hire car.
THINGS TO SEE IN SALT LAKE CITY
Salt Lake City was founded by Mormons. For this reason alone, Temple Square is a good place to start a sightseeing tour of the city. Visit the magnificent Salt Lake Temple, whose 64-meter tower is crowned by a statue of the angel Moroni. It was consecrated in 1893 and impresses with its neo-Gothic architectural style. Unfortunately, it can only be visited from the outside. The inside is only open to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But if you visit the Museum of Church History and Art afterwards, you will learn background information about the history of this denomination. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm and on weekends from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free.
Next stop on your city stroll might be the Beehive House. Built in 1854, Brigham Young, one of the early leaders of the Mormons, lived in this building. The house has been lovingly restored and furnished with antiques. The tour will take you back to a time long gone. You can visit the Beehive House Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am 9:00 pm. A guided tour begins every ten minutes. Admission is free.
If you want to get an overview of the city afterward, you can stroll to the LDS Conference Center, the convention center for this religious community. You’ll get a great view from its leafy rooftop terrace. Art lovers could also visit the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Exhibits range from Egyptian excavations to modern art. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Wednesday, you can visit it until 9:00 pm. On weekends, the doors open at 11:00 am. They close at 5:00 pm. A ticket costs seven dollars.
To finish your sightseeing, we recommend visiting the enchanting Red Butte Garden. A delightfully landscaped park awaits you there, with well-maintained paths that make for lovely walks. Opening hours vary depending on the season, but from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, the garden is open all year round. A ticket costs ten dollars.
