Located on a sandy headland, the natural harbour of Isafjördur was the most important transhipment point for goods in the sparsely populated West Fjords as early as 1569.
The town’s unique geographical location attracted settlers and merchants in due course. In the 16th century, Isafjördur even had a Hanseatic League Kontor and has a long tradition as a trading post.
