Udon Thani is the capital of the province of the same name, located in northeastern Thailand, just 100 km from the Laotian border.
It is located in the northern part of the Khorat Plateau, in the estuary of the Maenam Luang River.
The city’s airport is a domestic-only airport. It is about 560 kilometres from the capital Bangkok.
General information about Udon Thani
Udon Thani is the largest city in the province and has the status of a major city.
It is an important commercial city in northern Thailand, especially for the trade of goods with Thailand. The climate is the is tropical monsual and adapted to the high altitude landscape.
In summer, temperatures rise very high, sometimes above 40 degrees Celsius and it is very dry. In winter, heavy rain falls and temperatures can drop below 10 degrees Celsius.
Sights in Udon Thani
Tourists from all over the world come to Udon Thani to see the famous archaeological sites of Ban Chiang. They are located about 50 km outside the city and are easily accessible by hire car.
The excavation sites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Finds from the early Bronze Age are displayed at the Ban Chiang National Museum, which is located not far from one of the sites.
Another important excavation site is “Phu Phra Puttabat”, 40 km from Udon Thani, near Ban Pheu village. There are also several wats, temples of recent construction and a zoo with local animals in the city area.
