Rockhampton, with a population of 60,000 in an area of 187 square kilometres, is a medium-sized city in the centre of the state of Queensland in north-eastern Australia.

Nestled in the mountainous landscape of Mount Archer, some 600 metres high, and the Berserker Ranges, Rockhampton is picturesquely situated at the foot of the Fitzroy River, the largest river in this region.

The town is separated from the Pacific Ocean by about 40 kilometres, and there is a distance of about 200 kilometres to travel to the federal capital, Brisbane.

Founded as early as 1855, Rockhamptom did not receive its town charter until nearly 50 years later, however, with the rocks in the river around which the burgeoning town formed acting as its namesake.

The town is particularly proud of its many historic buildings.

Rockhampton’s bustling Quay Street is even the only one in all of Australia to earn the title of historic street view and is protected as a heritage building.

You can find out even more about life in Rockhampton during Australia’s founding years between 1850 and 1950 at Rockhampton Heritage Village, which is ideally reached by hire car via the Bruce Highway. A village from this period has been lovingly recreated here on 18 hectares.
