Discover Varna by Hire Car
Varna, with a population of more than 350,000, is a port city on the Black Sea in northeastern Bulgaria, near the border with Romania.
After Sofia and Plovdiv, Varna is the third largest city in the country and also plays an important role as a seaside resort.
Once the terminus of the legendary Orient Express, ferries to Odessa and Istanbul now leave from the port there.
Sights in Varna
The region has been inhabited since the seventh century BC, with the city being founded at the same time by settlers from Miletus in Greece. One of the landmarks of modern-day Varna is the Cathedral of Our Lady, completed in 1896.
The imposing structure is most impressive for its magnificent golden domes and its extraordinary woodwork in the nave of the church. In the immediate vicinity of the church is also the bazaar of Varna, which spreads an oriental atmosphere with its numerous stalls and merchants.
A remarkable collection of valuable 18th- and 19th-century icons can be seen a few steps away in the early 19th-century St. Atanas Church in the heart of Varna.
Also worth seeing in Varna are the Roman baths dating back to the second century. Covering over 7000 square metres, some of which is marble and unique mosaics, they are among the largest in the Balkans.
In its heyday, the 18-metre-high mineral baths were covered with quite a few domes.
Leisure activities in Varna
In addition, a visit to the Archaeological Museum with exhibits from the Varna Necropolis, dating back to around 4000 BC, is not to be missed. Varna and its surroundings are best explored by hire car.
