Discover Devonport by Hire Car
Devonport is the gateway to Australia’s smallest state, the fascinating island of Tasmania.
The port city on the north coast has two major links to the continent: air routes to Sydney and Melbourne respectively, and a ferry service also to Melbourne.
This bears the sonorous name “Spirit of Tasman”. Devonport has the character of an Anglo-Irish small town, so it seems “very” British like much of Tasmania.
Leisure in Devonport
It is best to travel around the island by hire car, as its geographical shape alone literally invites you to go on a round trip. Devonport is an ideal starting point for this or for individual, eventful day trips.
Exploring the Devonport area
Of the total of twelve national parks, Cradle Moutain-Lake, for example, is the shortest route from Devonport. It’s considered one of the most beautiful, and just getting there through the gorgeous Cradle Valley is a worthwhile must-do.
Not much further afield, to the west lies the smaller Rocky Cape, a destination for ornithologists and lovers of flora, especially in the summer seasons. This journey takes you past some of the most beautiful coastal scenery.
