Nyköping is a small town on the southeast coast of Sweden, with a population of just over 27,000 in an area of around twelve square kilometres.

In the 14th century, one of the most important Swedish centres of power was located here, with Nyköpinghus Castle, which was built between 1200 and 1300 and was also temporarily the seat of Charles IX.

Archeological excavations, however, point to traces of settlement as early as the early Middle Ages.

Today, the recently restored castle in Nyköping houses the city’s Archaeological Museum.

There are also excursions to the old mines near Nyköping, where you can slip into the skin of a miner for a short time.

Hiking enthusiasts are just as well catered for here. Directly adjacent to the city is the Sörmandsleden with its almost endless forests and the longest hiking trail in Sweden.

In recent years Nyköping has also become known for its international airport Skavsta, which is also called Stockholm-Skavsta due to its proximity to Stockholm, which is about 100 kilometres away, and is served cheaply by some budget airlines.
