Discover Kiruna by Hire Car
Kiruna is the northernmost town in Sweden. It lies just before the border with Norway in the middle of the province of Lapland.
In times past, Kiruna has made a name for itself primarily as an “ore town”, as some of Sweden’s most important ore deposits are located around Kiruna.
The two most important ore mountains in the city are Kiirunavaare and Loussavaara, both mountains where massive ore mining has been going on for about 100 years – but there is no end in sight.
Development of Kiruna
Very interestingly, the Kiruna city council recently made a plan to relocate the entire city.
This will happen in the next few years and has become necessary because some of the most productive iron ore veins run directly diagonally under the town and the town is on massively unsafe ground due to mining. However, since Kiruna makes a lot of money from mining the ore, this investment should not be a problem.
Sights in Kiruna
Touristically, Kiruna is one of the main tourist destinations in the north of Sweden. Not only is the city itself exceptionally pretty and offers tourists a variety of sights, but the wider surroundings are also exceedingly interesting for tourists.
So, not far from the city is Sweden’s highest mountain, Kebnekaise.
There is also an ice hotel nearby (German television reports about it regularly). It is located in Jukkasjärvi and is rebuilt annually starting in October.
To be mobile in the region of Kiruna it is absolutely necessary to have a hire car, because public transport is almost non-existent up here. Hire cars can be rented right in town and they are all equipped with winter packages and appropriate equipment.
