In the Free State of Saxony lies the easternmost city of the Federal Republic – Görlitz. To claim that the city is located directly on the border is probably wrong, because since the Second World War the border goes almost through the middle.
So the eastern part now belongs to Poland and hears on the name Zgorzelec what means in German Görlitz.
The city was almost completely spared from the Second World War despite the division and presents itself for this reason in historical garb. To explore Görlitz and its worth seeing treasures individually and independently, a hire car is highly recommended.
Sights in Görlitz
Görlitz is also fondly referred to by locals as the city of towers. The thick tower, the Nikolaiturm and the Reichenbacher Turm were once the guard or defense towers of the mighty city fortifications. Also part of the fortifications was the Kaisertrutz.
It once served as a kennel and is still a contemporary witness from centuries long past. High above the roofs of the city, the towers of the parish church of Saint Peter and Paul rise some 84 metres into the air.
The impressive, sacral magnificent building can be seen from afar and is also considered the landmark of the city of Görlitz. The interior of the church is dominated by the unique sun organ.
The biblical house in the heart of the city convinces especially with the relief, which is incorporated into the facade. It shows scenes from the Old and New Testaments and is therefore the namesake for the building.
A real attraction is the whispering arch. Due to its construction, it conducts even the quietest sound waves from one side to the other.
