Discover Ystad by Hire Car
Ystad is located at the southern end of the elongated Scandinavian country in Skåne County, Sweden.
While some think this corner still almost belongs to Denmark and is not yet “properly Swedish” in terms of climate, for example, the Skåne people consider their landscape to be the most beautiful in the whole country.
With a hire car you can easily convince yourself on a round trip. Ystad should definitely not be missed out.
Fans of crime fiction in particular can follow in the footsteps of Henning Mankell and his main character, Inspector Kurt Wallander.
Ystad has often been the inspiration for his surroundings.
Sights in Ystad
In terms of town history, Ystad is first mentioned in the 13th century. The Mariakyrka (St Mary’s Church) bears witness to this period, as does the Franciscan monastery of St Peter’s, founded as early as 1258.
The well-preserved medieval building complex is now home to the town museum. Ystad is home to numerous half-timbered houses from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. So a stroll is definitely worthwhile.
Speciality of Ystad
Thanks to its exposed position through fishing and trade (especially herring), Ystad had long been prosperous.
Around 1500, however, the herring shoals decreased drastically. Herring, especially pickled in various sauces, continues to be one of Sweden’s national dishes.
There is, however, one particularly smelly variety, surströmming, that divides opinion. But what better place to try it for yourself than Ystad, embraced by the Baltic Sea.
