Discover Visby by Hire Car
Visby is a very old city with an exceedingly eventful past.
Its location in the east of the island of Gotland makes Visby, in a way, a real jewel in terms of trade and strategic alignment of forces – not only for Sweden.
In the past, Visby was therefore always hotly contested, first by Vikings, then by Danish, Swedish and later even by German troops sent from the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.
WHERE TO SEE IN Visby
In 1805 Visby, which is now one of the Hanseatic cities, was placed under a preservation order – and rightly so. Hardly any other city in the south of Sweden has so many well-preserved buildings from the centuries of the Middle Ages.
Nearly all of Visby’s city centre remains immaculately preserved, delighting history-loving tourists from near and far.
The approximately 3.6-kilometre-long city wall and the Visborg ruins, as well as the numerous church ruins, including St. Karin and St. Nicholas, are considered special sights.
Free time activities in Visby
Every year at the beginning of August, Visby hosts a very special tourist highlight, the Medieval Week. This folk festival is a tribute to the time of the Vikings and it travels Viking clubs from all over Europe to show what they can do.
Whoever is on holiday in Visby is well advised to take a hire car and also be mobile for excursions in the surrounding region.
As many sights as the city itself has can also be found in the region, provided you have exactly time to visit them. But also in the city itself a hire car helps immensely to move quickly from one place to another.
