Discover Ljubljana by Hire Car
Situated between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, Ljubljana is one of the most beautiful and important metropolises in Slovenia.
With a history dating back thousands of years to early settlement by pile dwellers in 5000 BC, it provides fascinating insights into the culture and evolution of mankind.
However, Ljubljana also has a unique appeal in terms of landscape and architecture. In terms of architecture, the famous architect Jozé Plecnik in particular left his mark on the city.
In 1925 he was commissioned to redesign Ljubljana, the old German name for the city.
Sights in Ljubljana
Most notable are Tivoli Park, the Three Bridges, Zale Cemetery and the National Library of Slovenia building, all the work of architect Jozé Plecnik.
Plecnik, who lived and studied in Vienna and Prague, shaped a very Austrian image of the city of Ljubljana, although it also has an inviting Mediterranean feel thanks to the numerous cafés along the Sava River.
But the Dragon Bridge with its imposing bridge piers, the Franciscan Church on Preseren Square, the cathedral and, of course, the all-superior castle, from which you have a sensational view of the city of Ljubljana, are also definitely worth seeing.
Leisure in Ljubljana
Culture enthusiasts should definitely not miss a visit to the Metelkova Artists’ Colony. “Occupied” since 1993 but tolerated by the authorities, the former barracks building is today’s center of the alternative art scene.
For a weekend stroll, the market around St Nicholas Church extends down to the fish market at the colonnades by the river.
Of course, the ideal way to explore the magnificent city of Ljubljana and its surroundings is by hire car.
