Discover Warsaw by Hire Car
Warsaw, with 1.7 million inhabitants in an area of 520 square kilometres, is not only the capital of Poland, but also one of the most important economic and commercial centres in central and eastern Europe.
Within the continent, Warsaw is the eighth largest city with quite a few theatres and museums. Most of these are located in the downtown area, called Srodmiescie.
Sights in Warsaw
One of Warsaw’s highlights is the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the imposing Castle Square on its northwest side, home to the former Royal Palace.
Once upon a time, the Krakow Gate bordered the square to the south, though only the Gothic bridge remains today.
In the centre, you can see Sigismund’s Column, erected in the 17th century, which commemorates King Zygmunt, who declared Warsaw the capital in 1596. Turning east from here, you reach the “Palace under the Tin Roof”, a wonderful example of Baroque architecture.
Built in the late 17th century, it served as a residence for numerous Polish rulers and was the first building in the city to receive a roof made of tin rather than shingles, giving the palace its name.
Also worth a visit is the Market Square in Warsaw’s Old Town, with its picturesque facades of impressive patrician houses. Originally laid out in the 13th century, it was home to craftsmen and merchants on the outskirts.
Churches in Warsaw
Of the city’s many churches, St John’s Cathedral in particular, dating from the late 15th century, is one of the most beautiful. However, it only received its neo-Gothic façade in the mid-20th century as part of a redesign.
The sprawling Warsaw, with its 18 boroughs, is best explored by hire car.
