Discover Zakynthos by Hire Car
Zakynthos, with a population of 40,000, who also affectionately call their home “Zante”, covers an area of 400 square kilometres and is the third largest island of the Ionian Islands in the north-west of the Greek Peloponnese.
Touristically, Zakynthos is the most visited place after Corfu. Throughout history, the island, which has been inhabited since ancient times, has had three authoritative rulers, the Romans, Venetians and French, who have left their mark impressively.
Sights on Zakynthos
The main town of this picturesque spot, also called Chora in Greek, is also called Zakynthos and nestles in an arc on a hill on the east coast of the island.
Among the many churches in the town is the church of the Phaneromeni, which is one of the most beautiful in the Ionian Islands.
Above the town lies a citadel dating back to Venetian times, offering fantastic views of the entire stretch of coastline.
Here and in the south of Zakynthos you can also find the most beautiful beaches, which have been awarded the “Bauen Flag” several times by the European Union because of their excellent water quality.
Free time activities on Zakynthos
The fine sand and clear water are also extremely popular with water sports enthusiasts. Especially divers will find unique underwater areas on Zakynthos. An interesting destination is the wreck of a smuggling ship, which was sunk in the south in a bay by the smugglers themselves. It can only be seen from land from the 200-metre-high cliffs that surround it.
In June, however, you should be considerate of the breeding, extremely rare, sea turtles in the south on Zakynthos. Some beaches are then also temporarily closed. With a hire car, however, you can also reach other romantic bays and seashores.
