Discover Prevezza by Hire Car
The name of the town of Prevezza sounds somewhat Italian. Due to its location on the coast of northwestern Greece, it is also within easy reach of Italy.
And yet, Prevezza has the distinctive characteristics of the Greek landscape and lifestyle in this part of the country.
History of Prevezza
Even in ancient times, the Greeks were characterized as never being found further than 60 km inland. With Prevezza’s location between the Ambracian Gulf and the Ionian Sea, its attachment to seafaring is clear. But its scenic location north of the picturesque passage of a peninsula has its charms.
As a place of settlement, the area of Prevezza was prized in ancient times. To the north of it has been the Ancient City of Nicopolis, where the Battle of Actium between Romans and Greeks took place in 31 BC. About more than 1500 years later, Ottomans and Christians engaged in a naval battle in its waters, which ended with a victory for the Ottomans.
Leisure activities in Prevezza
Today Prevezza is the capital of a prefecture of Epirus and at the same time a characteristic small town and port, which, as an Orthodox episcopal see, also makes clear the Greeks’ deep attachment to religion.
According to its location, Prevezza is all about shipping and road traffic. While the most beautiful places in the city and the surrounding area can be explored by bus or hire car, there are various excursion steamers at the port.
