Discover Naxos by Hire Car
Naxos is with 448 square kilometers the largest island of the Cyclades in the southern part of the Greek Aegean Sea. Its population of just under 13,000 is separated from the neighbouring island of Paros only by a narrow strait.
The main town of the island, also called Chora, is the eponymous port town of Naxos.
Sights on Naxos
Scenically the island is very varied, while rocky cliffs dominate in the east, the shores in the west slope down to flat sandy beaches. At the same time, a mountain range stretches from north to south, reaching heights of up to 1000 metres.
The earliest traces of settlement on Naxos date back to the third millennium BC, and throughout history it developed not only into central sites of ancient belief, but also of culture.
Today, the marble gate of the never-completed Temple of Apollo and a huge statue dedicated to him still bear witness to this period.
Historical highlight of Naxos, however, is a Venetian fortress that impressively dominates the image of Naxos town on a hill. Of the original twelve defensive towers, the Glezos Tower can still be admired here today.
However, also interesting are the various residential towers from the Venetian period of Naxos, which are scattered all over the island and were considered country residences of the nobility in the Middle Ages.
Leisure activities on Naxos
Naxos is known for its unspoilt nature, which is also reflected in the island’s numerous natural beaches.
One of the most beautiful here is Agios Georgios near Naxos Town, which also offers a great range of water sports.
For those who like it quieter, Orkos or Plaka about seven kilometres from the Chora are good options.
The island is ideal to explore by hire car.
