History and present of Lefkas
A total of 23,000 inhabitants live on Lefkas. The island is 293 km² in size. The maximum length is 35 km and the width up to 15 km. Stavrotas is the highest elevation of Lefkas with 1158m above sea level.
In the Middle Ages, the island was a naval base and belonged to the Byzantine Empire. From 1479 to 1648, the island was occupied intermittently by the Turks. Only then did it revert to nearby Greece.
Exploring the island of Lefkas
Lefkas is now connected to the Greek mainland by a bridge, so can be easily reached and explored by hire car.
Because a car is mandatory on this paradisiacal island, as public transport is practically non-existent.
However, with a hire car, one can penetrate undisturbed into the most remote corner of the paradisiacal island and discover and enjoy the most beautiful of the many golden sandy beaches and romantic bays.
