Discover Kos by Hire Car
Kos is an island of around 290 square kilometres in the eastern Aegean Sea and is just four kilometres from the Turkish tourist resort of Bodrum.
The elongated islet, just eight kilometres wide, has had one of the few marinas in the whole of Greece for a number of years, making it of particular interest to yachtsmen.
The harbour, however, is not only a port of call for many private skippers, but also the base of several large yacht charter companies.
Leisure activity on Kos
Kos is primarily known for its numerous, endless sandy beaches and perfect tourist infrastructure, which are ideal conditions for almost all kinds of water sports.
With a hire car, however, you can also reach the remote villages that have retained the charm and appeal of the original Kos.
The cultural centre and destination of most holidaymakers on Kos is the capital of the same name, in the centre of which stands the plane tree of Hippocrates. The ancient physician is said to have taught his students under the plane tree, which is about 1800 years old and whose branches are supported today.
Sightseeing in Kos
The definitive port of Kos is Mandraki, at the entrance to which is the fortress of Neratza, built by the Knights of St John in 1315. The fascinating complex served to control the straits between Kos and the Turkish coast in the Middle Ages. Today, open-air theatre performances are held here.
The most significant archaeological site in Kos is the Asklepieon, an ancient sanatorium about four kilometres from Kos Town.
Picturesquely situated on a hill about 100 metres high and forested with cypresses, it was laid out between the fourth century BC and the first century AD in several terraces connected by a large, imposing flight of marble steps.
